Dogs are man’s best friends. We have heard this quote for so many times and various reasons are proving to us why this statement is true.
These furry buddies have been man’s companions anywhere they go. Dogs stick to their owner and protect them even at the expense of their own life.
Yet, we like dogs not just because they are loyal to us; we love them because they give us a sense of comfort and good company. These furry friends understand you down to your very core as if they are human. Try looking at their eyes on days when you feel down and lost; they will stare back at you and give you comfort. Aren’t they the sweetest?
Pets are paving their way in different industries, especially in entertainment. Dogs have gained a significant role in various movies, series, animated shows, and comic strips. Dogs are even the lead roles of certain shows, and if not, they are the best friend of the lead role. It has even come to the point that they are more popular than the human characters.
One of the great examples where the dog character became more prominent than the lead character is the comic strip, Peanuts. Who wouldn’t recognize Snoopy? Until now, many kids recognize this character because of its uniqueness. So, why don’t we dig in and discover more about our favorite black and white dog?
Who is Snoopy?
Snoopy is one of the characters in the famous comic strip entitled Peanuts. The writer and illustrator of this comic are Charles M. Schulz. It was first published in the year 1950 and released strips until 2000. Since then, the comic strip has appeared on television and in animated films.
Talking about the comic strip itself, Charlie Brown owns Snoopy. In many countries, Snoopy is more popular than Charlie Brown. In the strip, Snoopy is a dog and does not speak, but he was able to capture the hearts of many viewers by connecting to them through his human imagination and thoughts.
Snoopy played various roles in his fictional imagination. In his fantasies, he became an author, attorney, college student, and many more.
It was explained that Snoopy is a dog with the breed of a Beagle. Despite mocking and being lazy to his owner, Snoopy did not fail in showing traits of a true-to-life beagle. Possessing the characteristics of the breed, Snoopy still managed to express comfort, love, and concern to Charlie even though he does not always remember his owner’s name.
What is the inspiration for Snoopy’s look in the comics?
In the entire duration of the comics, Snoopy’s breed is a beagle. There are conversations mentioning that he belonged to this particular group. However, we have discovered that Snoopy is more than a beagle — he is inspired by the creator’s pet, Spike.
Schulz had his dog, Spike, ever since he was 13 years old. The black and white color of Snoopy resembles Spike, which is also colored black and white. However, Spike’s breed is a pointer mixed with an unidentified hound. Therefore, it was assumed that the unknown hound is a beagle.
Furthermore, it was clarified by the illustrator himself that Snoopy wasn’t bound to be a beagle at the start of the comics. Schulz said that he only finds the word “beagle” funny. Despite this, there are so many similarities between Snoopy and a beagle which could make us conclude that Snoopy is the latter.
Snoopy in real life
Having the characteristic of fluffy and big ears makes Snoopy belong to this particular breed. However, we have witnessed in the comic strip how Snoopy tends to act and think like a man. He even manifests human behaviors like being childish and selfish. Snoopy showcased various acts which allowed us to imagine that he is a person.
Being an anthropomorphic beagle means that the author is giving human attributes to objects, animals, or other matter which are not real humans. In the comic strip Peanuts, we know that Snoopy performed many actions which are very unlikely for animals to do.
Animals cannot become a surgeon, an astronaut, a secret agent, and many other professions that only the human brain can comprehend. However, anthropomorphism made us believe that animals are capable of these actions too. Aside from being a beagle, Snoopy is an anthropomorphic animal since he was tasked to do actions for man and was treated like a man as well.
At the same time, Schulz wanted to connect to his supporters, especially to the kids, in a way that is convenient and relatable to them. The way Snoopy was illustrated was angled in a direction where a child could recognize and recall him.
The Appearance of Snoopy vs. Beagles
As we have previously mentioned, Snoopy is not a pure beagle. His genes are inspired by the cross of a Pointer and a hound. With that, it is understandable that there are body features we can find in beagles but not with Snoopy, and vice versa.
Has it ever crossed your mind and asked for the height of Snoopy? Is he too tall for his owner or does he fit the criteria of being a beagle? Many avid fans and curious spectators found their way to find a solution to this query.
To arrive at this answer, researchers first considered the context and age of the characters in the comic strip. Since Charlie Brown was aged around eight years old, solvers identified the average height for this age, which is 128 centimeters. As they estimate the height difference between Snoopy and Charlie, it could be observed that there are five out of nine gaps between the two characters — making us believe that Snoopy’s height is probably around 41 centimeters.
On the other hand, the height of beagles usually ranges between 33 centimeters to 38 centimeters (13 inches to 15 inches). Since Snoopy is 41 centimeters (16 inches), his height is not that far from an actual beagle, therefore supporting the claims that he is truly a beagle.
Considering the context and time the comic strip was released, Snoopy’s birthday is on August 10. His first comic strip appearance was during October 1950, and since the comic strip stopped releasing during 2000 because of the author’s death, Snoopy’s age stopped as well. Therefore, he existed for 50 long years.
Consequently, he must have lived for 350 years if we apply the age counting for animals. However, this is very unlikely to happen in real life. The usual lifespan for beagles only lasts for twelve to fifteen years, considering that they don’t get sick and remain healthy.
Personality and skills
Different dog breeds would always reflect different personalities and skills. Just like humans, dogs have their place of origin and grow in varying places with different atmospheres and conditions. Snoopy may be a fictional character, but he also possesses traits similar to his original breed.
Sense of smell
Beagles are part of the list of the world’s best dog sniffers. In fact, they notched the top 3 seats in the list. These dogs are naturally inclined to smell and are very fond of it. As a matter of fact, they can spend the whole day just locating the scent they are curious about.
Beagles are originally trained to help their owners in hunting. They won’t stop barking or walking until they detect the source of the smell. Just like Snoopy, they would travel anywhere even on the top of their cage just to find what they are looking for.
Once these beagles have smelled a particular scent, there’s no way you can stop them. They are not called to have a “nose with feet” for nothing. They follow the track of that odor.
With the 220 million receptors of odors and smells, you cannot distract your beagle from roaming around. Their attention to that particular scent is fixed and there’s nothing you can do to change their mind. You may just opt to stop calling them or help them in finding the source.
Professionals say that beagles practice selective deafness. Once they have put their focus on a particular topic, there’s no going back. However, you can snap the reality out of them by creating another solid scent.
Although Snoopy is not loud in the comic strip, he still has tons of fantasies going over his mind. Thus, he is still loud. Being noisy and loud is one of the traits of a beagle. They love to bark, but there’s a reason behind it.
Beagles do not mean to annoy you. They bark because something suspicious is happening. It’s either they saw something unique or have found the source of the smell.
We have previously mentioned how beagles love to track smells. Once they have found the source, the only way for the beagles to inform their owner is through barking. So don’t get mad when they are barking endlessly. They are just probably trying to show you something interesting.
Snoopy is energetic all the time, considering the fact that he is fond of different personalities and professions in his imaginations. It proves how active and fit he is to try new ventures, thus reflecting the trait of beagles for being energetic.
The body of a beagle consists of muscles that allow it to be robust and sturdy. Remember that they are hunting pets as well, so it means that they can endure long runs and walks with their owners. Together with this is the responsibility of training and allowing your beagles to stretch and tone their muscles.
In the comics, Snoopy can think and imagine different events and circumstances. Just like a beagle, Snoopy is also intelligent. They tend to follow your orders when trained at an early stage.
Moreover, beagles can think for themselves. They won’t just follow orders unless they find the logic and benefit they could get from it. Many professionals say that you should train your beagles while they are young so that you can maximize their skills.
Snoopy is undeniably greedy and fond of food. He loves to eat chocolates, pizza, and anything he loves inside the refrigerator. It is a significant similarity with the traits of beagles.
We mentioned that beagles are good at sniffing any scent, and food is not an exemption from this. They will immediately follow the smell and eat whatever food that might be. Therefore, you must be careful not to display foods that are not allowed for your pet.
Charlie Brown may have confidence and social issues within him, but he has a friend that always got his back — Snoopy. Just like the beagles, Snoopy showed loyalty and concern for his owner.
However, Snoopy was not always fond of Charlie. He also has times when he is stubborn towards his master, and beagles are the same. You must train and enhance your pets’ socialization skills so that they may know whom they should give their trust.
Dogs are man’s best friend, be it in fictional stories or true-to-life situations. As owners, we do not just teach them things — we also allow them to inflict on us a sense of familial love and concern. If we can already find comfort in a comic character like Snoopy, what more if we start having our own beagle pet?
